Why We Built a Resort With No TV or AC (And Why Guests Love It)
There's a moment that happens on almost every guest's first night at The Forest Elephant. It's around 8 pm, and they reach for the remote that isn't there, or the AC switch…then, slowly, something shifts.
The decision that seemed crazy
When we set out to build a resort tucked between Kalapathar beach and the village, deep in the Havelock rainforest, we had a choice to make. We could build the kind of resort everyone expects — air-conditioned rooms, flat-screen TVs, the usual comforts. Or we could build something that actually belonged to the jungle it sits in.
We chose the jungle.
No TV. No AC. Just rustic luxury lodges designed to work with the rainforest instead of sealing it out.
And yes, we have wi-fi.
Where you actually are
The Forest Elephant sits tucked between Kalapathar beach and the village, wrapped in rainforest on nearly every side. It's not a resort with a garden — it's a resort inside the forest, and that proximity is the whole point.
Which means mornings here don't start with an alarm. They start with birdsong — real, layered, constant. Andaman is home to a striking number of endemic species found nowhere else on earth, and many of them are active right around the lodges at first light: woodpeckers working the canopy, drongos moving through the trees, the occasional call of a serpent eagle overhead. Guests who've never picked up a pair of binoculars in their life find themselves lying in bed just listening.
By the time you'd normally be checking your phone, you're already tuned into something far older and far more interesting.
It's not about deprivation — it's about design
Our jungle lodges are built to breathe: natural airflow, shaded canopy cover, and open-air design that keeps things comfortable the way the rainforest has been cooling itself for millions of years. Without a TV humming in the corner, evenings open up into something else entirely — conversation, the sound of the forest waking up at dusk, or just quiet.
It's less about what we removed, and more about what that absence makes room for.
What our guests actually say
We hear it almost every checkout: "I didn't think I'd survive without AC. Slept so well, thanks for sending extra blankets!"
Guests tell us they slept better than they have in months. That they actually talked to their travel companions, sitting outside on the deck while watching the Milky Way. That they noticed things — parakeets overhead, frogs sitting on lily pads in the stream, the different kinds of trees.
For our birders, herpers, and divers especially, this isn't a hardship. That's the whole point. You came to Havelock to experience the island.
