One of the quiet joys of spending time at the Forest Elephant is discovering how alive the forests and beaches are with birds. From early morning calls drifting through the trees to graceful silhouettes soaring above the sea, the islands are home to a remarkable diversity of birdlife.

Many of these species are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else in the world. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or simply someone who enjoys noticing nature, here are 10 birds you might spot during your stay in the islands.

1. The Andaman Drongo – The Mischief Maker of the Trees

Glossy black with a distinctive forked tail, the Andaman drongo is one of the islands’ most charismatic birds.

Known for its intelligence and playful nature, it often mimics other bird calls and performs impressive aerial acrobatics while catching insects.

Locally, these birds are often the watchful guardians of mixed flocks, sounding alarms whenever predators appear.

2. The Andaman Coucal – The Quiet Forest Walker

Unlike most birds that flit high in the canopy, the Andaman coucal prefers to stay closer to the ground. With its chestnut wings, grey body and glowing red eyes, it is both striking and shy.

Its deep, echoing calls often carry through the forest at dawn or dusk, giving away its presence long before you spot it.

3. The Andaman Serpent Eagle – Guardian of the Forest

This powerful raptor is often seen perched silently above forest clearings or gliding over the canopy. As its name suggests, it feeds mainly on snakes and reptiles.

Its loud whistling call is one of the most recognizable sounds in the Andaman forests.

4. The White-bellied Sea Eagle – Ruler of the Coast

Seen soaring along coastlines and over turquoise waters, the white-bellied sea eagle is one of the most majestic birds of the islands. With its striking white chest and dark wings, it is unmistakable in flight.

These eagles are skilled hunters and can often be seen swooping down to snatch fish straight from the sea.

5. The Andaman Crake – The Secretive Forest Wanderer

One of the most elusive birds of the islands, the Andaman crake is rarely seen but often heard. This small rail prefers dense undergrowth and damp forest floors, where it quietly searches for insects and small invertebrates.

Spotting one is considered a special moment for birdwatchers, as these shy birds usually stay hidden among thick vegetation.

Stay tuned for more birds next week!
